Producing Better Prints

Jack and John are very excited to bring you this episode of We Talk Photo to introduce a new educational course for producing better prints. Zack Schnepf picture Our guests, and the creators of this course, are Sean Bagshaw (below) and Zach Schnepf (left).  Both are accomplished photographers, workshop leaders/teachers and all-around great guys!  Printing can have many barriers to entry, but as they explain, printing is the third leg of the creative stool and is often overlooked or so intimidating folks don’t go down this path too far. What Sean and Zack hope to do is to de-mystify printing and make it easy for the layperson, or experienced printer, to learn how to properly prepare a file for print and then execute the print, either at home or at a lab.

Zach and Sean have previously taught an in-person class on printing and they have taken this course into the digital realm that can be delivered to your computer. The course is 32 chapters long with a couple of bonus chapters plus many sample images for you to work on alongside them as they teach various aspects of the printing process.  From monitor calibration to soft-proofing, sizing and sharpening on to hard proofing and final printing, this course covers every aspect of a robust and thorough print process.

Interview with Krista McCuish

John and Jack welcome Krista McCuish to this episode of We Talk Photo. Krista has travelled all over the world and engaged in several careers and throughout has remained connected to the visual arts.  She currently resides in Nova Scotia, which is where she completes a large portion of her work.

On a recommendation from Guy Tal, Jack and John instantly fell in love with Kristas work, particularly the care and attention, the thoughtfulness, that she puts in to every photograph.  It is very evident from her portfolios that she is not just a photographer, she is an artist in how she approaches and executes her work.  Each image is inspired by something within, then thoroughly executed in the field before she applies her creativity in the digital darkroom.

Her work is slowly gaining notoriety and we are so pleased to have her on this show in order to showcase her thoughtful approach to her craft through her beautiful images.  We encourage each one of you to visit Kristas website to view her images.

Eyes Wide Shut in Ukraine by Cole Thompson

John and Jack welcome back Cole Thompson to the show.  Cole recently sent out a mailing with a collection of images in it, all centered around the people of Ukraine. With his images and words, we were moved by his expression and wanted to have him on the show to talk about this body of work.

The collection of images is titled Eyes Wide Shut and is a group of images of everyday Ukrainians with their eyes closed.  Cole realized that when you normally ask someone to take their picture, they smile big and put on a “camera face”, showing only what they want you to see.  One way he was able to get folks to drop the camera face was by asking them to close their eyes, which they did!  Most did not speak english, so this was accomplished with lots of sign language and gesturing.  Eventually he came away with a body of work, both poignant and beautiful, that is doubly impactful these days with the war going on.
