Interview with David Cobb

Jack & John welcome David Cobb to the podcast.  David is an incredible photographer based in the Pacific Northwest and who has travelled extensively throughout the country as well as internationally. Listen in as Jack and John talk about a wide variety of topics with David in this newest episode.

Davids Bio

Workshop leader David M. Cobb is a nature and wildlife photographer who has hiked and photographed throughout the world. A member of NANPA, and the PPA, he is a regular contributor to a variety of gardening, lifestyle, nature, and travel publications as well as calendars, cards, books, brochures, and other printed materials.

As a long-distance hiker, I have sharpened my photographic perspective over the years on the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide, the Canadian Divide and most recently walking across Iceland. After years of capturing images along the trail and becoming more and more passionate about the art of photography, I took the leap and “quit my day job” to devote myself full time to my photographic work.

Now as I photograph throughout the US and around the world, I am continually awed by the broad spectrum of nature’s offerings—from a delicate heliconia flower on the exotic island of Roratonga to the sweeping Patagonian landscape. My particular fondness for the Pacific Northwest is reflected in my local outdoor shots. My goal is to capture the wonders I see in nature for the enjoyment of all those with an eye for the extraordinary.

I currently have two published books on Japanese gardens; Quiet Beauty: Japanese Gardens of North America, Visionary Landscapes. My work has shown at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington D.C., the Kew Botanical Gardens in London, U.K., the Burke Museum in Seattle, and the University of Oregon.

My images, based on nature, are sometimes realistic and sometimes abstract but always designed to elicit emotional reactions from the viewer. My goal is to go beyond the ordinary in ways that hopefully stimulate others to pause and appreciate some of the beauty and wonder of our earth in a way that balances some of the stress of everyday life. My images are included in collections in several countries and my photos have been showcased in galleries, used in numerous publications (including Sierra Club’s “Mother Earth” and Inner Reflections calendars), as well as stock.  I’ve also had winning and commended images in international contests including BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year and Windland Rice Nature’s Best Competitions.

Photo Manipulation Round Table Discussion

In this episode we bring together a group of photographers for a round table discussion about photo manipulation and discuss items like cropping, sky replacement, compositing, etc.  The act of creating art is in the eye of the artist and most of us accept that, however, it’s when artists have not been completely transparent or tried to deceive the true nature of the art, that things start to get interesting.

Listen to this engaging episode and the various points of view shared.  If you have your own thoughts, please drop us a note and let us know!

Interview with Ron Rosenstock

Jack and John welcome to the show a fantastic photographer and all-around great guy, Ron Rosenstock. Ron is a world traveller who has amassed an amazing portfolio of images, both in color and in monochrome.  He is currently exploring the world of infrared and how to interpret scenes with this cool twist on digital imaging.  Listen in to the conversation as they discuss a multitude of photography topics.

Ron Rosenstock has been creating images of the world and its people since the 1950’s.  His work has had many incarnations from vivid colors to black and white, from the darkroom to digital, from large format cameras to full-frame digital, from early dawn to infrared dusk.  His images are real, though real is hardly subjective. Viewed in objective terms, color is far more real than black and white is – if only because color is such a defining element of reality as experienced by the human eye. His view of the world developed from his correspondence with Ansel Adams, his work in study groups from 1967 to 1973 with his teacher Minor White and his time as a private student of Paul Caponigro.

Ron has published six books of his photographs and written numerous articles on the art and craft of photography.  We has been featured on the WGBH nightly news with Emily Rooney in Boston and numerous cable programs around New England. Ron still continues to exhibit his work, most recently at The National Museum of Iceland, lectures at camera clubs and professional organizations and serves as a Board member of NANPA (The North American Nature Photography Association). He also leads tours around the world for professional and amateur photographers including Bhutan, Iceland, Italy, Morocco, New Zealand, Greenland and Cuba.
