Interview with Cody Schultz

Jack and John kick off a new series on We Talk Photo where we bring on guests who you may have not heard of, and introduce them to our audience.  Meant as a way to bring some exposure to up and coming artists, we hope that this feature episode will bring some interest as well as creative sparks to you, our faithful listener.

On this episode, we bring Cody Schultz to the program.   Cody is a 23 year old college senior studying Elementary Education.  When he picked up a camera, he quickly learned the technical aspects of photography and then went in search of more satisfying methods for creating art.  He is currently pursuing monochrome photographs using a 4×5 film camera.

Artist Statement

I believe my work was best described by a fellow photographer when he called it, “poetry for the soul.” Over the course of my career as an artist, I have tried my best to reveal to my audience a side of nature that may often be ignored, that is not typically photographed by the masses. Intimacies found in nature tend to tell the best stories and, as my personal taste in art has evolved, I have begun trying to find these stories more and more. Stories of isolation, of perseverance, all found in nature. These are what speak to me as an artist, and I strive to reveal them with my own twist. Not only are my pieces meant to tell a story, they are also meant to be printed large and shown in galleries, homes, and offices alike. For this reason, I spend countless hours with each piece, making sure it is exactly how it is meant to be, of the highest quality, before releasing it to the public.

FROM BILL: “This tree was a special circumstance; I was out after a pretty snow and saw a tree way out in a field and wanted to shoot it, but it was behind a fence and way out in the field. I did not have my longer telephoto lens with me and then it dawned on me I could fly out to it!!! I flew the drone out across the field and then adjusted my altitude to get the composition and background I wanted and then shot it! I converted the shot to monochrome in post and my feet were dry! I didn’t have to climb the fence and then walk onto private property, and I got the shot!!!”

Interview with Erin Babnik

Jack and John welcome Erin Babnik to the show.     Erin is a Canon Explorer of Light, member of Photo Cascadia and accomplished international workshop leader.  Listen as Jack and John explore her motivations and experiences as well as her perspectives on her photography and teaching others.

Erin Babnik is known internationally as a leading photographic artist, educator, writer, and speaker. Her ambitious and expressive style of landscape photography brings together an unusual integration of adventurous exploration, progressive techniques, and formal education in the arts. In her writing and public speaking, Erin explores topics with a unique blend of art historical, philosophical, and instructional ideas, an approach that has made her one of the most notable voices among the current generation of landscape photographers.

Erin’s dedication to the medium of photography evolved out of her years working as an art historian, photographing at archaeological sites and in museums for the purposes of teaching and research. Previously, she had experimented with photography creatively in art school, working with both film and early digital cameras to explore the potential for photography to communicate ideas in graphic design projects. Full immersion in the art of photography would come some years later, however. After transferring to UC Berkeley’s Ph.D. program in Art History, she began to produce photographs for her dissertation and for lecturing as an instructor of undergraduate courses. It was at this point that her interest in photography became an obsession. Her goal of producing a high-quality archive of photographs for educational purposes ultimately led to the pursuit of compelling images as ends in themselves.

Interview with Erwin Buske

Jack and John welcome the fantastic PNW photographer Erwin Buske to the show.  Listen in as we talk about landscape and nature photography with someone who has been passionately pursuing amazing images from around the world.

Artist Statement

As a photographer I am both a witness and interpreter of nature. My goal is to capture the essence of the landscape through the lens of my inner vision.  The canvas for my image is nature.  There is nothing that stands between me and Portrait of photographer Erwin Buskenature and the starting point for my images is the direct experience of nature.  Taking the path less traveled does help in the creation of unique images, but even more important is bringing who I am as a person to my images.  This includes my emotions and thoughts, both at  the time of capture and also while processing the image.  Success in photography, finding my own vision, is the integration of my direct experience with nature with who I am as a person, my authentic self.  If the resulting images also resonate with others who share in my vision, then I have created photographic art.
