Post Processing Workflow

In this episode John and Jack respond to some listener feedback to dive deeper in to the topic of workflow. Specifically, they walk through their post-processing workflow and how they work through the order of when to do what when processing an image. As they discuss, how an image is processed is unique to each photographer and it is an area where each persons artistic vision can shine.  The information they share is specific to them, merely shared as a discussion point, not as a fact or “the” way to process an image.  There are many great software tools out there and so many different ways to achieve quality results……what matters in the end is how the image looks, not how you got there.

  • Keyword your images right when you import them.  Extremely beneficial for finding images as your catalog grows.
  • You can look at processing at 3 levels; Global Adjustments, Regional Adjustments, Targeted Adjustments

  • White balance evaluation/adjustment
  • Noise reduction
  • Clean-Up
  • Exposure balancing
  • Color
  • Punch
  • Light shaping
  • Creative treatment
  • Re-visit exposure/color
  • Selective sharpening
  • Vignette
  • Save master file (psd or tiff)
  • Sharpen & size for specific outputs/uses
  • Save as jpeg

Photography Travel Tips

In this episode Jack and John share some advice and tips about how to prepare and pack for photography trips.  Whether it’s a one day or a multi-day trip, there are some things that you can do to increase your chances of success (and enjoyment) while in the field, while not worrying about those little things while you are out shooting.  With proper preparedness you can focus on creating beautiful images and bringing them back home with you. Jack and John have spent considerable time over the years preparing, packing and executing photography trips, both domestically and abroad and they share their vast experience with you.  Plus, they talk about some recent news hitting the photo industry as well as a few cool gadgets that you might want to check out.

Jack and John interview Mark Lewis from the ProGrade Digital Inc. Prograde specializes in professional quality memory cards and workflow accessories for photography and video. Mark has been in marketing for over 20 years and part of that time was spent at SanDisk where he built the consumer marketing organization when it was an OEM-focused company and then most recently he was at Lexar running marketing for that organization.

The idea for ProGrade Digital started back in 2017 when the market for NAND flash started to tighten and manufacturers shifted focus from the removable storage market in favor of their enterprise business.  A core team of people from Lexar, that also built the business at SanDisk, decided to take their passion for this market and focus on the professional end of the market. – thus the name, ProGrade Digital. Bill Fortney is a photographer, writer, pilot, and highly sought after presenter with over 45 years of experience in-the-field. Bill has done professional work as a newspaper and magazine photojournalist, sports photographer, (once an official photographer for the Washington Redskins), medical photographer, and nature/landscape photographer. Bill’s best selling books include; The Nature of America (with David Middleton), American Vision (with David Middleton, John Shaw and Wayne Lynch), America From 500 Feet (with Wesley Fortney), Bill Fortneys Great Photography Workshop. Vent with Jack and John

A lighthearted look at a few of the things that bother us! Because we spend so much time in the field and on the road we get the opportunity to observe people in their natural habitat and have lots of time to think about things. This episode is dedicated to a few of the more interesting things  that we’ve witnessed or have thought about.  It’s a tongue in cheek look at the human condition related to photography.

Jack and John are primarily landscape and nature photographers by profession, however they both are well versed in the other genres of photography.
